[Home] Honeycomb-Inspired Spring Mantel

I've always been drawn to the look of a honeycomb and, with hexagons being the shape of the moment, I decided to incorporate the naturally perfect design into our Spring mantel.

Not the typical Easter pastels, but Spring means flowers, flowers mean bees, bees make honeycombs... so there's that connection.  I also like to decorate with natural elements and metal, moss, and burlap seem to fall in nicely with the hexagon honeycomb theme. 

Instead of removing the mirror that hangs above our mantel,  I decided to cover it up and use it like a frame.

the banner was cut to resemble a metal die cut (i used gold glitter paper and my cricut machine)

i used muslin for the backdrop...

and the hexagons are cut from burlap.  

for some depth, i painted some of the shapes with metallic acrylic paint.

 brass tack & black mother of pearl eggs 

for the mother of pearl eggs, I covered a plastic egg in black tissue paper and glued on the beads with a hot glue gun

 moss & burlap egg

mossy squirrel (found at a local shop)

I have one more element to add that's a little more on the "cute & whimsical" side.  Stay tuned!
