Cinnamon Apple Sauce Ornaments

materials needed:
jar of apple sauce
1 bottle (4.12 oz) cinnamon (or 1 cup, 2 tablespoons)
rolling pin
cookie cutters
cookie sheet
oven
fine glitter and/or tinsel glitter and if you really want a sugar crystal effect... german glass glitter

I used this recipe which consists of only 3/4 cup apple sauce and 1 bottle of cinnamon. Roll out the dough, cut out shapes and pop it in a 200 F oven for 2.5 hours. That's it. I had to try it out to see if it would work! Last year I used a version that included glue (1/2 cup applesauce, 1/4 - 1/2 cup cinnamon, 1/2 cup white glue).  I ended up throwing those out (bad choice of cookie cutter) but I think they were a bit stronger than the non-glue version.

Anyhow, these are not as strong as salt dough.  They are a bit crumbly on the edges and I can tell that one drop will be the end of them. Next time I will roll them out a bit thicker so they aren't as fragile.  But they do make your house smell nice!

Admittedly, in their undecorated form, they aren't the prettiest things.  But with some puffy paint "frosting" and a little flocking and tinsel glitter I think they turned out pretty darn cute. Next time I'm going to pick up some german glass glitter for a sugar crystal effect.

tip:  the puffy paint does soften them up, so don't handle too much until the paint dries.

I was going to use them as gift toppers, but since they are fragile, I'll just hang them on the tree or place them in a shallow bowl.  They smell really nice and I think the scent will last a long time.
